Thank you for reinforcing the fact that Memorial Day is not the day to memorialize sales of mattresses, electronics, and automobiles. I don't believe our memorialized soldiers, airmen, sailors, and marines thought they gave their lives for such. It may have been to protect the person next to him or her, a lofty purpose on its own, but they were told that they were sent to protect a noble cause, and that call to duty must adhere to their sacrifice. These turbulent times have brought such thoughts to the fore I've watched our democracy subverted and reduced. It forces a question I, we, must consider: What will we sacrifice to retain our democracy?

Perhaps we've had it too easy. We pulled together the most competent army in human history. Won WWII before getting bogged down in Korea and Vietnam - new ways of fighting. We brought "shock and awe" to Iraq, but could not win hearts and minds.

Meanwhile, our domestic society devolved into a consumer hells cape, with Bob and Carol and Ted and Alice fighting for the latest and the bestest. Who needs education? Civic culture? civc virtue? Who needs any of those things.

We’ve earned our inconsequentiality. All based on ignoring the problems that hit others, just so it doesn’t happen to us. Willful ignorance and civic irresponsibility. Sloth, greed, selfishness, shamelessness … the current four horsemen of our apocalypse, again leading us to the dark ages.
