In the late 60s, I earned an A in Baylor's Christian Ethics class. The term paper assignment was to explain in detail how you will implement/execute a deeply held moral value. My well-researched paper was the plan for June and me to emigrate to Canada and legally reside there. (Everything from what to pack into the VW on short notice, which border crossing to use, contacts in Canada, immigration documents and procedures, etc.)

For the first time since then, June and I are investigating similar contingencies.

Deece, it may be a day late, but it’s definitely worth waiting for. You have eloquently and accurately stated my worst fears about 2024.

I worry that there are so many who think “it can’t happen here” and think they have the luxury of either sitting out the election or voting for a third party. They’re not crazy about Biden cuz ‘he’s too old, he’s not liberal enough, or he’s not doing enough about [pick an issue] for my taste.’ As if they can just wish away the greatest threat to our democracy in our lifetime.

Some of these folks may be the same ones who weren’t crazy about Hillary in 2016 and were naive enough to think, “How bad could a Donald Trump presidency really be?” Well, we all found out just how much damage one person could do in four years.

All those folks who think ‘it can’t happen here’ should be aware that the German people freely elected Adolph Hitler in 1933.

Hyperbole? Do you really want to f#%k around and find out? It’s time all of us who care about Democracy commit to acting as though this election is a stark choice between Democracy and Totalitarianism. Because it is.

Thanks again for such cogent analysis and eloquent words, Deece.

Deece, As usual you have framed the issue of reelecting Donald Trump succinctly and with all of the possible horrors set forth and explained. I was one of those Democrats who thought the Constitutional safeguards established would prevent any permanent damage. Not for any lack of trying on Trump's part, the government is pretty much as before Trump's election .

One area he did harm was in the types of judges McConnell helped him appoint but elections have consequences. A conservative Senate and a Republican President will appoint judges just like the ones Trump appointed and eventually the tide will turn and you never know , in the long run ,how the judges may change. While I disagree with most of their opinions on social issues, I think they are smart and knowledgeable in American jurisprudence. Of course , Clarence Thomas should be impeached.

Back to Trump, I think Joe Biden's election stopped Trump's dictatorial moves in their tracks. January 6 defendants are pretty much spending time in federal prison and ,hopefully, Trump will join them. Mike Pence stood his ground, the military was not going to let the tail wag the dog and Trump alienated the leadership and rank and file of the FBI and the CIA. Finally he failed miserably in every court with his stolen election nonsense. Now, he is under indictment, his vaunted company has been found guilty of fraud and awaits sanctions, he was found guilty of paying hush money to a porn star and lost the case against the victim who accused him of rape.

As you opined he is stupid, but canny. Canny though he may be , as an incumbent he lost the presidency.. Despite all of his endorsements, the 2022 elections did not go well for him. Each day on the campaign trail he gets a little stranger. There remains ,of course, the next generation of Wallace and Perot supporters, known as the base ,who will support him regardless. I know the polls show him ahead of everybody. But these primary polls are just that. If Iowa could give us Ted Cruz, a second place win for Pat Robertson ,Rick Santorum and Mike Huckaby, they will be pleased to send Trump our way. Keep in mind the only Iowa Republican primary winner to become president was George W Bush.

I guess what I am saying is that it is too early to admit defeat . Biden's age will hurt but not enough to hand the crown to Trump at this early date.
