Despite the APD letter, one thing remains clear about Daniel Perry: Greg Abbott has only operated throughout with the most crass and cynical political motives.
Well it's grand to see "dudgeon" and "retcon," (had to look that one up) in this fine piece. Damn, I love language, even when it's Guv Greg's chewed up and spit out chunk of lyin' jerky. Another thing, APD is beginning to remind me of the old days when the cops in San Antonio and Houston just shot you (if you weren't white) or beat the pee-y-doodle out of you (if you were white) when you pissed them off (which was most the time). I tell you, Deece, this is an unsettling situation. Fine piece though, truly.
The Austin BLM protests in 2020 were a severe "stress test" for the APD and the whole city government. Culturally, we Austinites (Austinians?) pride ourselves on respect for the First Amendment and the spirit of dissent. We also expect our police to 1) keep us safe, and 2) behave themselves. The murder of Garrett Foster fell right into the cracks between those expectations.
(Remember the outrage over the beanbags and rubber bullets police fired at BLM protesters?)
City officials — the Watsons and Fuenteses — want to deliver a functional, well-trained police department to their constituents. Their job will get tougher, not easier, as the suspicion and unrest roiling the country come home to Austin.
There's a phrase I usually apply when some poor miscreant (at least accused and convicted, if not actually guilty) is sentenced to death or to decades in prison: Does this outcome improve public safety? I think the question is applicable in this instance as well.
I liked this post only because there was no vomit emoji. Not a comment on your writing, Deece, which is excellent as usual, but because of the absolute shitshow these people are making of our government.
But I agree with cognomum; it’s always good to see the words “dudgeon” and “retcon” used so skillfully in a piece.
Not much else to say, you have wrapped in all for Texas to see!
What they choose to do with these corrupt leaders who are ruling their lives, remains to be seen, but I will still hold out hope as my beacon, that we have not let a group of power mad wannabe Oligarchs, run this County into the ground!
Which we all realize, (Ihope), that it will only be Trump as the figurehead, for a short period! His ambitious, greedy loyal inner circle is much too impatient for him to remain in power!

Made tougher by stupid Defund the Police BS. Whoever thought that one up messed up a lot of discussion between the sides.

Great question, David, and relevant not only to a thug like David Perry but to the message his pardon and release sends to other thugs.

God help us all from these Crusaders of old.❤️
