Is it okay to hate the legislative majority in this state? Oh, never mind, I shall hate them, regardless. They are, individually and as a whole, a waste of food, oxygen, and water.
I hate using the word "hate." But it is sad to see how the Legislature, never an exemplar of democratic virtues, has sunk so low in its disregard and disrespect for the people it pretends to represent.
I did some volunteer legislative advocacy in the 80s. Yikes! A great mixture of dedicated and forward thinking members and staffers alongside some of the most mean spirited fellows one would ever hope to meet.
My creepiest memory was being in the Speaker's office, hearing Gib Lewis tell our little group a lie when he knew that each of us already understood it to be a lie. Now THAT'S power!
"They can lie to you, but you can't lie to them." This aphorism is thought to guide the behavior of lobbyists and advocates but it increasingly seems to guide the behavior of legislators, as if lying to your constituents is a requisite part of the job. It ties in with the trend towards performative governance, which gets worse every session.
I seriously laughed out loud at the office when I read this.
Known as memorial resolutions, the latter are attended by great solemnity and respect in both chambers. Which begs a question: would a memorial resolution for the Dallas Cowboys be appropriate at this time?
"Fun" indeed
Good times, Tim. Good times.
