Your writing about Paul Burka makes me wish even more, that he was still writing about the Lege, and at the same time let me remember who he was and why I idolized him. I sit here marveling that he had the stomach and wisdom for 40 years of Texas politics. As pathetic as leadership is today, he is saved from that dreadful task of commenting.
I was lucky to come into legislative politics while a bunch of the great journalists were still reporting — Paul, Sam Kinch, Ross Ramsey, Peggy Fikac, Wayne Slater, Harvey Kronberg. A few are still around, but I believe they'd all admit (off the record, of course) that the Capitol beat is not as fun as it used to be.
