If my own highly unscientific polling methodology (counting political yard signs during my wanders through my west Austin neighborhood) are any indication (which they aren’t), Tuesday’s results may not be a foregone conclusion. In the last week, I’ve seen a significant uptick in the number of “Team Cornyn” signs in previously silent yards, while I have yet to see one single solitary Paxton sign. Granted there are still far more Tallarico signs (after all, this IS Austin), but among my neighbors who care to wear their Republican affiliation on their lawns, Cornyn wins in a landslide.
Ive been surprised by the lack of yard signs. I’m in a north SA neighborhood, with lots of retirees and ex military folks. I can’t recall seeing either a Paxton or Cornyn sign. The “Pray for America” signs are the most numerous 🤣
I'd like to ask my readers who are in the consultant class (I still have at least one, don't I? Bueller?), but I seem to recall that Rick Perry in his 2010 campaign for governor eschewed yard signs, on the theory that they were no longer an effective use of campaign dollars.
Perry also gave up seeking newspaper endorsements, I think. Karl Rove, what say you?
Under trump, the senate went from its purported "greatest deliberative body in the world" to the greatest joke in the world. It's more akin to Russia's Federation Council, except more absurdly funny. And just wait for the Talarico v Paxton race (not that it matters on the R side). We'll be exposed to the meat eating vegan who promotes Sharia Law and wears a chador in private. Oh, they gotta toss in him being a card-carrying commie socialist as well. Can't waste a classic R trope.
My favorite diss on Talarico was Trump (at least twice) calling him "six gender" because nobody explained to him what "cisgender" means. I wonder how far we'll get into the fall campaign before Trump wises up.
